NCKU Innovation Headquarters/Center for Biomaterials Research(CBR)

CBR was established in 2002 under NCKU Research and Services Headquarter. CBR has a strong team in R&D, IP, process and product management, biocompatibility, animal implantation and regulatory affairs. The backbone technologies of CBR are led by two senior technology founders each with more than 20 years of experience in this field, along with long, well-trained Ph.D. and M.S. researchers in materials science, biology and mechanical design.

CBR has a strong well-experienced and reputable surgeon team responsible for a variety of bone-related clinical applications, including open chest surgery (sternotomy), spine surgery, plastic surgery, joint fracture surgery, dental surgery, etc.

In recent years, the center has also been committed to cartilage regeneration, the research and development of antibacterial calcium-based bone fillers/bone substitutes, and reconstruction after bone cancer surgery. Therefore, one of the important goals of development for the center is to cultivate professional talents to enhance the research and development energy in the field of biomedical materials and to demonstrate innovative results. In addition, it is worth emphasizing that our center has always focused on solving unmet needs in traditional clinical settings as its primary research and development focus. The following briefly introduces some examples of the future prospects of the center:

1.Cultivate professional talents to enhance R&D energy in the field of biomedical materials and demonstrate innovative results.

The calcium-based bone particles and calcium-based bone cement developed by the center have the characteristics of not disintegrating when exposed to blood/body fluids and hardening in blood/water. It has been clinically proven that its performance exceeds that of many similar products at home and abroad. It has world-class performance level and are currently protected by patents in many countries. The center continues technological innovation and breakthroughs and applies product features in the following fields:

  • Cardiac surgery (sternum closure surgery) helps the sternum quickly stop bleeding and accelerates healing. Among them, calcium-based bone particles are a major innovation in the market because they have the properties of stopping bleeding, anti-inflammation and greatly increasing the speed of bone healing. It can not only greatly increase the probability and timeliness of complete surgical healing, but also improve the quality of life of patients. Reduce national health insurance and personal costs.

  • Intra/peri-articular fractures.

  • Acute and chronic spinal surgery (including vertebral body reconstruction and fusion surgery) to prevent osteoporosis and fracture patients from further fractures, with special emphasis on the treatment of chronic fractures/pain among the increasing number of elderly people today.

  • Antibacterial calcium-based bone granules/bone mud to reduce the risk of infection during orthopedic surgery.

  • Cartilage regeneration

2.Apply research results to accelerate the promotion of domestic medical materials.

The average life expectancy of the global population is increasing year by year, and the demand for medical care is also increasing year by year. In particular, pharmaceutical and medical device-related industries have become key development projects in various countries around the world, and innovation in the biomedical industry is also a key promotion direction in my country. Based on various excellent features, this domestic calcium-based bone filling/replacement material has been used by many domestic medical centers (National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Chi-Mei Hospital, Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, E-DA Hospital) and teaching hospitals (Chia-Yi Christian Hospital); its related clinical The results have been published in journals and seminars. Through the innovative breakthroughs and clinical application results of this technology, we hope that it can help the competition and promotion of domestic medical products in the international arena.

Mission Statement

The Biomaterials Research Center specializes in hard tissue biomedical implant materials for orthopedics and dentistry (such as calcium phosphate series bone replacement materials and titanium alloy implant metal materials, etc.), dental amalgam alloy filling materials, composite materials, etc., to provide a consultation window for industry and academia to bridge the research gap between industry and academia.
